Je temer obvykly letni vecer roku 1984. Temer, protoze dnesni noc se rozpouta bitva o budoucnost lidstva. Jejimi ucastniky se stanou dva lide a jeden TERMINATOR.

Za ctyricet let svet bude vypadat dost pochmurne (ostatne jako ve vetsine sci-fi). Pocitace se rozhodnou, ze vsichni lide jsou pro ne hrozba, a zacnou je systematicky likvidovat. Jen jeden clovek je schopny ostatni sjednotit a naucit je se stroji bojovat. Jeho jmeno je John Connor. V okamziku, kdy pocitac zjisti, ze lide mohou vyhrat, najde zpusob, jak vzpoure predejit. Vysle do minulosti kyborga s jedinym ukolem - zabit Connorovu matku driv, nez se John narodi. Terminator neni jediny, kdo prichazi do roku 1984. Velitel vzbourencu posle sve matce ochrance. A tak se dnes vecer ve meste objevili dva muzi - kazdy z nich ma svuj ukol a oba jsou ochotni pro nej obetovat svou existenci.

Prvni do minulosti prichazi kyborg Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenneger), stroj na zabijeni s vizazi Mr. Olympia (zpocatku dokonce bez plavek). Prvni velka a jedina skutecne zaporna role Arnolda, ktera z nej udelala hvezdu. O chvili pozdeji projde casem sympaticky hrdina Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn - Terminator byla jeho prvni spoluprace s Jamesem Cameronem). Velmi schopny vojak oddany Connorovi, ktery nezna nic jineho nez valku a smrt a narozdil od Terminatora vi, koho a kde hleda. Kyborg jde na vec systematicky a likviduje vsechny Sarah Connor podle telefonniho seznamu.

V roce 1984 zije cisnice Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) svuj malo zajimavy a pomerne klidny zivot. Tedy az do vcerejska. Dnes vecer toho na ni zacina byt mnoho. Uz videla v televizi zpravu o druhe vrazde zeny jmenem Sarah Connor a ted ji navic sleduje nejaky cizi muz. Az na disko, kam se schova, si ji konecne najde Terminator a muz, ktereho povazovala za utocnika ji zachrani.

Reese: "I'm here to help you. Reese, Sergeant/Tech-Com, DN38416... Assigned to protect you. You've been targetted for termination."
...
Reese: "Listen. Understand. That Terminator is out there. It can't be reasoned with, it can't be bargained with...it doesn't feel pity of remorse or fear... and it absolutely will not stop. Ever. Until you are dead".

Zpocatku je Sarah presvedcena, ze Kyle prisel z blazince a ne z budoucnosti. Pobyt na policejni stanici, kam se dostali po prestrelce a divoke honicce, ji v tom jen utvrdi. Reese je zpovidan psychiatrem.

Silberman: "Then how are you supposed to get back?"
Reese: "Can't. Nobody goes home. Nobody else comes through. It's just him and me."

Vsichni si mysli, ze je pouze presvedcivy schizofrenik, ale to se jim brzy nevyplati. Na stanici vpadne Terminator a udela z ni kulnicku na drivi. (Pred vpadem pronese nejslavnejsi Arnoldovu vetu vubec - "I'll be back") Ven se jako obvykle dostane jen Sarah a jeji ochrance (neni ten kyborg neschopnej?). Ti na uteku prespi pod mostem, kde Sarah Kylovi osetri zraneni. Snazi se ho presvedcit, ze skutecne neni ta, kterou hleda.

Sarah: "Kyle, what's it like when you go through time?"
Reese: "White light. Pain. Like being ripped inside out... slowly. Like being born, maybe."
...
Sarah: "You talk about things I haven't done yet in the past tense. It's making me crazy. I can't think. Are you sure you've got the right person?"
Reese: "I'm sure."
Sarah: "Come on, me? The mother of the future? Am I tough? Organized? I can't even balance my checkbook. I cry when I see a cat that's been run over... and I don't even like cats."
...
Reese: "John gave me a message for you. Made me memorize it. 'Sarah "...this is the message... 'Sarah, thank you. For your courage through the dark years. I can't help you with what you must soon face, except to tell you that the future is not set... there is no such thing as Fate, but what we make for ourselves by our own will. You must be stronger than you imagine you can be. You must survive, or I will never exist.' That's all."

Posledni zastavkou pred zaverecnou bitvou je motel, kde se Sarah s Kylem ubytuji a kde se venuji zabavnym cinnostem jako treba vyrobe bomb. Take projevi city, ktere k sobe navzajem chovaji. To je nejdojemnejsi a nejneznejsi scena z celeho filmu (a mimochodem taky jedina tohoto druhu, kterou Cameronovi dovolili) a holka, ktera by nechtela byt na miste Sarah, nema srdce. Noc plna vasne neni dulezita jen pro ty dva, ale pro cele lidstvo. (Hadejte proc *grin*)

Reese: "John Connor gave me a picture of you once. I never knew why. It was very old. Torn. Faded. You were young, like you are now. You weren't smiling...just a little sad... I always wondered what you were thinking at that second... I memorized every line, every curve...
Sarah, I came across time for you. I love you. I always have."

Kyborg je jim v patach a proto prchaji. Na ceste do tovarny, kam maji namireno, to opet schyta Reese, tentokrat poradne. Ale stejne bojuje dal. vyhodi Terminatora do povetri, avsak ten z plamenu vyjde bez masa a s peclive nalestenou a funkcni elektronickou kostrou. Nez Kyla zabije, je rozclenen na nekolik casti, ale i kus kyborga je zatracene aktivni. Nakonec z nej ale Sarah udela placku v lisu a je po vsem.

Sarah odjizdi smer Mexico a pri tom nahrava pasky pro sveho syna, ktery se ma, podle jeji postavy, uz brzy narodit.

Sarah: "...and the hardest thing is deciding what I should tell you and what not to. Well, anyway, I've got a while yet before you're old enough to understand the tapes. They're more for me at this point... to help get it all straight.
Should I tell you about your father? That's a tough one. Will it change your decision to send him here...knowing? But if you don't send Kyle, you could never be. God, you can go crazy thinking about all this...I suppose I'll tell you...I owe him that. And maybe it'll be enough if you know that in the few hours we had together we loved a lifetime's worth..."

Zastavuje u pumpy, kde ji maly spanelsky mluvici chlapec vyfoti (to je ta fotka, kterou dostal(dostane) Kyle od Johna) a pak odjizdi (misto do zapadu slunce) do krasne namalovanych bourkovych mraku...

The boy yells something in Spanish as he runs off.
Sarah: "What did he say?"
Attendant: "There is a storm coming in."
Sarah (quietly): "I know."

Co se tyka scen mezi hlavnim hrdinou a hrdinkou, jejich strihani se stalo v Cameronovych filmech zvykem. Stejne jako pozdeji ve Vetrelcich zmizely skoro vsechny, kde se nestrili. Pravda, i tak jsou jeho filmy delsi nez je bezne, ale vazne bych chtela nekdy videt tzv. direktor's cut - stale castejsi ukaz, kdy reziser posle na videa verzi, do ktere producenti nestrcili nos.

Sarah: "Kyle?"
Reese: "I'm wrong here. I wasn't meant to see this... It's...like some dream. This...this...
...and you...all so...beautiful. It hurts, Sarah. More than death. Don't you understand...it's all gone!"
Sarah: "We can change it, Kyle. We have to try."
Sarah: "There's no fate but what we make for ourselves. Right? Come on. Let's go, kiddo. Whaddya say?"

Sarah: "I was thinking, there's so much I've got to show you when we get through this. It's mind boggling, the possibilities...Disneyland, the beach, movies...matinees with popcorn and foot-long hot dogs..."
Reese: "Hot dogs?"
Sarah: "I want to buy you a hot dog so bad,Kyle...all the things you've never seen and done. You're here, but wherever you go, and whatever you touch, you bring the war with you."
Reese: "My whole life has been combat."
Sarah: "I want it to be over for you."
Reese: "Not possible."
Sarah: "I want it to be over for me too. I feel like I slipped over some invisible line, that I'm in your world now. Everything's the same, but I see it differently. It's like, there's you and me, and him...but nobody else can understand or help or even touch us."

Terminator se dockal samozrejme pokracovani Terminator 2: The Judgment Day, kde je Arnie uz dobracek a zleho a mnohem kvalitnejsiho T-1000 hraje uhrancivy Robert Patrick. Tentokrat padouch nehoni primo Sarah, ale mladeho Johna (Edward Furlong). Scenar a rezie opet James Cameron. Daniel L. Perez - nezavisly scenarista se pokousel protlacit skrz hollywoodskou masinerii i treti dil, ale bez uspechu. Mozna bohudik...
